Sources

The basic account of all early branches of this family is Nathan Stout, The History of the Stout Family: First Settling in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey in 1666 (Bethlehem, Pa.: Geo. A. Chandler, 1929), originally composed in 1823. This edition includes addenda by Sarah Weart and others. Stout’s account has little chronological or geographical grounding. One of the most thorough attempts to compensate for the imprecision of the manuscript is John E. Stillwell, Historical and Genealogical Miscellany: Early Settlers of New Jersey and Their Descendants, 5 vols. (New York, 1903–32), 4:295-374.
