Sources

The standard reference for establishing the parentage of Ruth (Brinson) Stout is Lewis D. Cook, Daniel Brinson of Middlesex County, N.J., American Genealogist 32 (1956): 33-6. Earlier accounts of this family appear in William H. Benedict, The Brunson (Brinson–Brynson) Family, Somerset County Historical Quarterly 3 (1914): 289-92, and Howard S. F. Randolph, comp., Jan of Rotterdam and His Descendants: Including the Families of Joncker or Jonckers, Longfield, Beekman, Lawrence (Popinga), Jansen and Greenland, New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 59 (1928): 302-17, at 310-3. These accounts misidentify Ruth as a member of the Greenland family, following the Nathan Stout, The History of the Stout Family: First Settling in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey in 1666, with addenda by Sarah Weart and others (Bethlehem, Pa.: Geo. A. Chandler, 1929).
