Leslie Mahler, The English Ancestry of Judith¹ Ray, Wife of Henry¹ Smith of Hingham and Rehoboth, Massachusetts, American Genealogist 87 (2014–5): 263-8, is the first authority to establish the parentage of Judith Ray. Her father was identified with Denston in his marriage record, at Alburgh, Norfolk, and the ancestors of two other Great Migration immigrants to Massachusetts, Simon Ray of Braintree and the Rev. Nathaniel Rogers of Ipswich, are also identified with that parish. Unfortunately Mahler found it difficult to access the registers of Denston, and the published research on the Denston Ray family is of inconsistent quality. Further research should be expected.
