Sources

The most authoritative general account of this family is Gail Richard Quackenbush, The Quackenbush Family in America (Wolfe City, Tex.: Henington Publishing Company, 1987). It is manifestly an updated edition of Adriana Suydam Quackenbush, comp., The Quackenbush Family in Holland and America (Paterson, N. J.: Quackenbush & Co., 1909), with more consistent documentation and without the questionable pre-American material.

The parentage of Machteld Post is uncertain. She was called Machteld Jansz at the baptism of one child, but this seems to reflect her marriage, rather than her patronymic. Gail Richard Quackenbush (p. 10) argues instead for her placement as a child of Captain Adriaen Post and his wife Claartje, of Bergen, N. J., and the Dutch colony in Brazil.
