A biography of the immigrant John Mousall appears in Robert Charles Anderson, George F. Sanborn Jr., and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634–1635, 7 vols. (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1999–2011), 5:186-90. He was the brother of Ralph Mousall, who is treated by Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620–1633, 3 vols. (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995), 3:1309-12, and Robert Charles Anderson, The Winthrop Fleet: Massachusetts Bay Company Immigrants to New England, 1629–1630 (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995), 480-5. New material in the latter includes a baptism, possibly of Ralph’s son John, which may indicate the family’s English origins.

It is sometimes presumed that Joanna was a sister of James Thompson of Woburn, on the grounds that her husband’s will calls James brother and appoints him overseer, e. g. by Charles Henry Pope, The Pioneers of Massachusetts: A Descriptive List, Drawn from the Records of the Colonies, Towns, and Churches, and Other Contemporaneous Documents (Boston, 1900; reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1965), 322. James’s parentage has been discovered more recently, however, and no English record of that family—not even his father’s will—mentions Joanna.
