See Walter Goodwin Davis, comp., The Ancestry of Sarah Miller, 1755–1840, Wife of Lieut. Amos Towne of Arundel (Kennebunkport), Maine (Portland, Me.: Southworth Press, 1930), 73-80, reprinted in Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis (1885–1966): A Reprinting, in Alphabetical Order by Surname, of the Sixteen Multi-Ancestor Compendia, 3 vols. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1996), 1:430-6. Davis disputes the ancestry of George developed by an English descendant, Francis Dixon-Johnson, in 1891, on the grounds that Dixon-Johnson postulated a different regional origin from his place of residence, and a very different coat of arms from that borne by his ancestors. Philip Howard Gray, Penobscot Pioneers (Camden, Me.: Penobscot Press, 1992–6), 1:54-6, analyzes the heraldic descriptions of the Dixon coats of arms and concludes that they do not differ as greatly as Davis thought. However, Gray does not undertake a full analysis of the Dixon-Johnson pedigree, which effectively leaves Davis’s doubts unaddressed.
